We’re currently in the midst of apple season. An apple can look like the picture of perfection on the outside, but inside can be inedible, ‘rotten to the core’.

Just like humans, apples can ‘go rotten’ for many reasons – external influences like bacteria and fungi, or infection by moths (anyone who’s ever eaten a homegrown apple will have had the unpleasant experience of a little worm having got there first!) Once the worm is inside, it heads for the core. The damage and rot that then sets in travels from the core of the apple – its heart – to the visible outside. In Luke 6:44 we read “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.”

Nothing can be done for an apple that has gone that far. But for us, it’s a different story. We can be saved, fixed, made good and whole. The rot CAN be reversed, and we can be forgiven, no matter what our sins or how rotten our core. Mark 2:17 “… Jesus said to them, [the Pharisees] “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners”.”

By repenting of our sins and asking God for forgiveness, we can have a hope of life eternal, made possible only by Christ Jesus our Lord, the ultimate sacrifice.
